Awujale’s blessings paved way for my 2023 election victory – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, stressing that the monarch’s support and spiritual backing contributed to his 2023 presidential win.

Addressing an emotionally charged Fidau prayer in Ijebu Ode, Tinubu recalled visiting Oba Adetona before the 2023 election, seeking his counsel and prayers.

“I came to him and he blessed me, and he said, ‘you are winning that election, and you will be returned to office,’” Tinubu said, adding, “I was successful because of your support and because of the blessing of the late Awujale.”

Tinubu emphasised that his victory held deep cultural importance, “Our history would not have been completed, carefully and richly, if I had failed in the last election. I was successful because of your support…”

He described Oba Adetona as a principled leader who stood firm during the June 12 crisis and who upheld “dignity, honour and pride to the Yoruba race”

Tinubu reminded the audience of Oba Adetona’s legacy during Nigeria’s return to democracy, “I could recount June 12 episodes in his palace… our resistance, our determination to reverse the annulment of June 12. Baba was steadfast, resolute and very encouraging.”

He described the monarch as “very honest, bold, courageous, and truthful”

The President urged Ijebu people and all Yorubaland to carry forward the late monarch’s message, “We have to be more united, bonded in the spirit that he (Awujale) left behind…We must cherish his legacy and appreciate him in death.”

He lauded the renaming of institutions after the Awujale and encouraged religious and communal harmony as the greatest tribute.
