Dr. Paul Ogwuche, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, announced that all Public Health Emergency Response Centres across the state have been fully reactivated. This strategic move ensures that the state is prepared to promptly detect and contain any potential cases of COVID-19.

Beyond COVID-19 preparedness, the state has made notable strides in controlling Lassa Fever. According to the commissioner, the Epidemiology Unit has conducted continuous screenings over the past four weeks without recording a single new case. Currently, there are no patients admitted for Lassa Fever treatment in the state.

Dr. Ogwuche expressed optimism about the situation, noting that if the state completes the 42-day incubation period without detecting new cases, Benue could officially be declared free of Lassa Fever.

This progress has been driven by strong collaboration and coordinated response efforts. The state government worked closely with partners such as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and the World Health Organization, who provided technical and operational support. Interventions included training healthcare workers, supplying personal protective equipment, funding response activities, and carrying out public awareness campaigns through community messaging and media jingles.

With the outbreak now under control, some partner organizations have begun to withdraw their support, reflecting confidence in the state’s improved capacity to manage public health challenges independently.

In addition, the government has intensified efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery. Under the leadership of Hyacinth Alia, the state has begun revitalizing Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) across all 276 council wards. So far, over 110 PHCs are undergoing upgrades, including improved infrastructure, solar-powered lighting, and enhanced staffing.

Although the state recruited additional health workers into the PHC system in late 2025, Dr. Ogwuche acknowledged that workforce gaps still exist. However, he emphasized that the government is addressing these challenges gradually to ensure accessible and quality healthcare for all residents.

Overall, Benue State’s coordinated efforts highlight a proactive approach to public health, combining disease control, infrastructure development, and strategic partnerships to safeguard its population.
