Reactions have poured in from various states, with many celebrating the young achiever for her outstanding accomplishment that has elevated Nigeria to the pinnacle of global recognition. The News, released Tuesday, 5th August, 2025, on multiple social media platforms and discussed by prominent individuals nationwide, has sparked diverse opinions.

While many praised Nafisa’s dedication and believe she deserves national celebration, some feel she should not be specifically recognized. Others express disappointment, suggesting that regional biases may be at play, noting that numerous talented individuals from different parts of the country have gone unrecognized for their achievements.

Speaking to Lagos Voice, Raheem Anifa from Lagos remarked. “Many Nigerians have been doing great things for a while now. But Nafeesa should be recognized, so that it can inspire many young Nigerians, especially the females.”

She added that Nigerians are exceptionally intellectually gifted. The government should prioritize education by celebrating her at the Presidential Villa.

Abdurrahim Ibrahim, a 400-level student of Agriculture at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto stated that: “Nafisa performs excellently. It’s not easy to stand out among 69 countries, including native English speakers. She deserves not only national recognition but international recognition. If the Nigerian government is truly promoting education, then they should celebrate her to motivate others to learn more.”

About Nafisa Abdullahi

Nafisa Abdullahi Aminu is a 17-year-old student from Yobe State, Nigeria. She won the prestigious Global English Championship at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals held in London, United Kingdom. Competing against over 20,000 participants from 69 countries, she was recognized as the world’s best in English language skills.

Nafisa excelled in grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and public speaking at the championship. She represented the Nigerian Tulp International College, Yobe State.

Her victory has brought a significant honour to Nigeria and her home state. It highlights the success of local educational initiatives and inspires many young Nigerians. Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has publicly congratulated her and promised a grand reception in her honour.

More Voices Demand Recognition

Jabir Sani, a final year student of Educational Foundations Department at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), shared that even if Nafisa is not given the full award given to the Super Falcons, she should at least receive half.

“Nafisa deserves a high recognition. She should be at least given $50,000. She deserves more than an accolade.” He asserted.
Sa’adatu Abubakar, a teacher from Dinar Basic Science Secondary School, Dakingari, Kebbi State, emphasized balance.

“Nafisa should be a living example for many of our children. The fact that the world now knows her is in itself an achievement.”
She added that Nafisa needs not only an award but a welfare that will go a long way in making her become a change maker of the Nigerian society.

For Bilal Shu’aibu, 20, from Kaduna State, he expressed that: “They should do justice to her and even add more awards. It’s not easy to compete with 20,000 intellectual minds and win. This is not football, it’s intellectuality. She should even be given $200,000,” he affirms.

The Tweetstorm Vibes

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, CON, also commended Nafisa’s remarkable achievement and calls for her to be honoured just like Nigerian’s women’s football and basketball teams, with $100,000, a three-bedroom flat, and a national honour.

He recommended rewarding Nafisa’s teacher and emphasizing the need to prioritize education and recognize citizens’ achievements.
In his words: “I strongly recommend that Nafisa deserves $100,000, a three-bedroom flat, and a national honour from the federal government of Nigeria.

In addition, her English teacher deserves a reward similar to the one given to the coaching and technical team of the football and basketball players. We must continue to take education very seriously and reward the efforts of our citizens.”
Within 24-hours, Pantami’s post garnered 414K views, 3,274 reposts, 402 quotes, 10.2K likes, and 261 bookmarks. While many supported his views others are cast in between a mixture of praise and criticism.

A user with the name ‘Erasthegreat’ commented: “How much will remain when everyone who wins is given $100,000? Nafisa deserves an award, but we have handed out so many $100,000 gifts. Pantami, you should give her the money if you feel that strongly, its a good cause.”

Another user ‘Wewe Adefisayo’ asked, “What about the girl who won the Mathematics competition?”
Faras Adams added, “She rather needs a deserving scholarship across the world, ably funded by the Nigerian state.”

A Mix Reaction Trails Facebook

On Facebook, thousands of comments have also sparked the News of Nafisa Abdullahi’s win, with many praising the achievements while others raising questions. According to DC Hausa, two students from Yobe, Nigeria, won at the TeenEagle Global English Competition. While Nafisa Abdullahi Won the English Basic Skills Competition, Rukayya Fema won the Debating Competition.

Rukayya’s post on Facebook had over 61K reactions, 6K shares and 5.9 comments. One such user, Muhammad Obi Adeyemi, commented on Ruqayya Fema’s video post, expressing his skepticism.

“This would’ve been a really proud moment for Yobe and Nigeria as a whole,” he said, questioning the transparency of the competition, asking for details, such as venue, judges, and list of the contestants from the 69 participating countries.

“This isn’t to discredit anyone, but we deserve transparency, especially when public funds and the image of our state are involved.” Adeyemi added.

Not everyone shared Adeyemi’s doubts, however, Abubakar bin Abdullahi praised Nafisa’s excellence, saying, “Our children are excellent. This shows that if given the chance, they can excel in many other endeavors.” He emphasised the role of parents, teachers and religious knowledge in achieving ultimate excellence.
