A Muslim survivor recounts how a Christian man saved his life during the Palm Sunday attack in Jos. Sa’idu Murtala, who lives in Filin Ball, described the terrifying incident that occurred on March 29 when armed assailants attacked Anguwan Rukuba, resulting in the deaths of over 40 people.
In an interview with Daily Trust, Murtala, a garden egg vendor, explained that he was with customers when the shooting started. “I often sell garden eggs near Rukuba. At around 7:30, I reminded my friend Hassan, a sugarcane seller, about the time and asked when we should head home. He suggested staying until 9 pm. However, as I turned to assist a customer, gunfire erupted.”

He recounted the chaos, with everyone seeking shelter. Suddenly, a Christian man opened his home to hide him. “I was terrified and thought I would be killed as panic settled in around me,” Murtala said. “He took me into his wife’s room and even had her bring me food. He did everything possible to soothe my fears. I spent the night there, and the next day, he called my father to come and get me when it was safer.”
Murtala noted that the man was aware of his Muslim faith, as he frequented that area for business. After the incident, his phone, which he had lent to someone for charging, was returned once conditions improved. “I will forever be grateful to the man who saved my life,” he added.

He remarked that his friend Hassan is still unaccounted for, as attempts to reach him have failed. This experience left Murtala with the realization that kindness can be found everywhere.
“It taught me that not every person is the same. In both Christianity and Islam, there are good and bad individuals. If only more people were like this man who helped me, the world would be a better place. I may not have anything to repay him with, but I trust that Allah will reward his kindness. Allah will surely open doors for him,” he concluded.
