A Federal High Court in Abuja has determined that former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is qualified to run in the 2027 presidential election, resolving legal disputes regarding his constitutional right to reclaim the office.
This verdict came in response to a lawsuit initiated by an Abuja-based attorney, Johnmary Jideobi, who requested a ruling to prevent Jonathan from presenting himself as a candidate for any political party in the upcoming election. The plaintiff also sought to bar the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from acknowledging or publishing Jonathan’s candidacy, arguing that Sections 1(1), (2), (3), and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution disqualified him from seeking the presidency again.
