The Federal Government has issued a warning that the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway may be closed within two weeks if motorists and other users do not adhere to safety regulations and improvements are not seen along the route.
Olufemi Dare, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, made this announcement on Monday, September 21, during a media briefing following an inspection of the highway.

He explained that this decision was prompted by a directive from Minister of Works David Umahi, due to ongoing safety violations, vandalism, and other illegal activities on the road. The government can no longer accept issues such as speeding, illegal truck parking, unauthorized U-turns, the presence of motorcycles and tricycles, roadside trading, and other actions that jeopardize road safety and damage infrastructure.

Dare expressed concern over drivers exceeding the speed limit of 30 km/h in construction zones, with some reaching speeds of 120 km/h. He noted that these traffic violations have resulted in loss of life on the highway.

“We have set a maximum speed of 30 km/h on the coastal road, which is clearly indicated. However, people continue to drive at 100 km/h. This situation cannot persist, and lives are at risk on this road almost daily. If we do not see improvement in the next two weeks, we will have no choice but to close the road,” he stated.
