First Lady Remi Tinubu clarifies comments, says FG also aids Tomato and Pepper sellers, Boli vendors

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasized that her women’s empowerment initiative extends beyond just akara sellers. Beneficiaries include traders of tomatoes, peppers, vegetables, and bọọli (roasted plantain), as well as other small business owners.

During an empowerment event in Jigawa State, she refuted claims that she exclusively focused on akara sellers for this program.

She highlighted that her office has already allocated N100 million to support 2,000 female petty traders in the state, with each recipient receiving N50,000 to reinvest in their businesses.

“I know there have been rumors that I mentioned only akara. It’s not just about akara. We’re also supporting tomato vendors, pepper sellers, and others in the market. We will keep empowering them to ensure their businesses are sustainable,” she stated.

Tinubu further explained that the initiative aims to enhance existing small enterprises and uplift women’s livelihoods throughout the state.

The First Lady also conveyed her positive outlook on Nigeria’s prospects, encouraging youth to recognize the country’s abundant natural resources beyond just oil. She reminisced about witnessing vast orange orchards during a recent visit, describing the sight as “mind-blowing.”

“I hope our young people will appreciate the resources available in this nation. We haven’t even begun to tap into them because we’ve been fixated on oil, while there are countless other opportunities,” she commented.

Tinubu urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to take pride in their country and remain optimistic, insisting that “Nigeria is a blessed land” belonging to all its inhabitants.
