The category was won by Dr. (Mrs.) Lola Odeyale Ayo-Fashida, while Mr. Offiong Charles emerged as the second runner-up.

What Olumide Omosebi said

Speaking after receiving the award, Omosebi expressed deep appreciation for the recognition, describing it as a major encouragement for decades of humanitarian work carried out without financial reward.

“I run an NGO called the Nurses’ Health Initiative. What we do is help victims of domestic violence, abuse, and child sexual abuse. Across all 20 local governments and 37 LCDAs of Lagos State, we provide support, interventions, and prosecution of abusers,” he told The Lagos Voice.

Omosebi revealed that his organisation has operated pro bono for over 25 years, providing shelter, legal support, education, and medical care to survivors.

“In about 25 years, we have not collected a dime from anyone we have helped. So when people come together to recognise what you’ve been doing for half your life, it feels good, it encourages,” he added.

Despite ongoing collaborations with law enforcement agencies, Omosebi emphasised that the scale of cases requires stronger backing from the state.

“Yes, we work with the Office of the Commissioner of Police. We are across police formations and family support units. But it would be fantastic to have government support in facilities, amenities, and finances,” he said.

He highlighted the enormous cost of caring for victims, many of whom require psychological treatment, medical attention, or long-term safe housing.

“Apart from rescuing victims, we house them and send them to school. Public institutions could help us with scholarships because it is very expensive,” he noted.

Shocking Cases of Child Pregnancy

Omosebi disclosed alarming statistics from 2025 alone, revealing that his organisation handled nine cases of children impregnated through rape, including: A 12-year-old, Two 14-year-old girls, A 13-year-old girl and all abused by family members.

“We have children bearing children. It is incest, it is child rape. Government intervention in rescuing and raising these children, especially in orphanages, will be very welcome,” he said.

Celebrating Integrity and Impact

The Gani Fawehinmi Impact and Integrity Awards, organised annually by HEDA Resource Centre, celebrate Nigerians who demonstrate exceptional courage, honesty, and service to society.

Omosebi’s recognition underscores the urgent need for stronger systems to protect vulnerable women and children across the country.

The event organisers praised the winners for upholding the values embodied by the late legal icon, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, integrity, justice, and service to humanity.
