Lagos State must position itself as the human capital hub of the world by investing heavily in skills development and preparing young people for the demands of the global economy, Deputy Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has said.
Hamzat stated this while speaking on Journalist Hangout, a programme on Television Continental (TVC), where he identified human-capital development as a major priority for Lagos amid its rapidly growing and predominantly young population.

He noted that the mismatch between the number of graduates and available employment opportunities had made skills development critical, stressing that many companies struggle to find workers with the skills required despite the large number of graduates.
According to him, Lagos youths should be trained in emerging and high-demand fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and blockchain to prepare them for opportunities in the global economy.
On migration, popularly known as “Japa,” Hamzat said government could not prevent Nigerians from seeking opportunities abroad, but should focus on producing more skilled workers to fill critical gaps.

He disclosed that the state plans to establish a College of Medical Services capable of producing at least 1,000 medical professionals annually, compared with the approximately 300 currently produced by the Lagos State College of Medicine.

The APC candidate also outlined plans to reform waste management through waste-to-energy initiatives, additional transfer stations and the integration of about 13,000 informal waste sorters into a structured system.
He said the planned Olusosun transfer loading station would handle about 2,500 tonnes of waste daily, reducing pressure on the landfill and allowing more waste to be recovered, recycled or converted to energy.
On flooding, Hamzat said the state was deploying Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to monitor drainage blockages, canal encroachment and illegal developments on flood plains. He warned that officials who approve such developments would be identified and held accountable.
He added that about 1,000 personnel had been deployed for environmental flood management, while the government was considering greater use of surveillance and sensors to detect blockages in underground drainage infrastructure.
