HEDA reaffirms National call for Justice and Accountability

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) has officially unveiled the winner of the 9th edition of the Gani Fawehinmi Impact and Integrity Awards (GFIIA), reaffirming its commitment to promoting integrity, justice, and accountability in Nigeria.

Speaking at the ceremony in Lagos, HEDA Chairman Mr. Olanrewaju Suraju described the awards as a national moral compass, inspired by the values of the late legal luminary and human rights icon, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAM, SAN), a man he praised for his lifelong courage, integrity, and dedication to justice.

“Integrity Is the Foundation for National Transformation” — Suraju

In his address, Suraju reflected on the continued relevance of Fawehinmi’s legacy, stressing that Nigeria must uphold the virtues of transparency and moral courage at a time when corruption and civic repression remain profound challenges.

“This event stands as a moral compass for our nation. Chief Gani Fawehinmi embodied unwavering integrity, courage in the face of oppression, and a relentless commitment to justice and human rights,” he said.

He aligned the ceremony with the 2025 International Human Rights Day theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” noting that human rights and integrity must work hand-in-hand to create a just society.

Celebrating Nigerians Who Choose Integrity Over Corruption

The GFIIA annually recognises public officials, activists, journalists, community leaders, and everyday Nigerians who demonstrate exceptional honesty and service to the public good.

Suraju emphasised that each awardee represents proof that integrity is not only possible in Nigeria but also impactful and transformative.

“In challenging times, these stories affirm that integrity is powerful. Their character and courage illuminate the path toward a more accountable society,” he said.

Youth Engagement Takes Center Stage

This year’s edition places a special emphasis on youth involvement. HEDA announced a new partnership with the Gani Fawehinmi Students’ Chambers, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, which joined as co-hosts of the event.

Suraju highlighted that building a culture of integrity must begin with young people.

“This collaboration reinforces our belief that the future lies in mentorship, engagement and inspiration. If we are serious about change, the youth must champion the fight against corruption,” he noted.

Suraju extended gratitude to HEDA’s partners, including the MacArthur Foundation, civil society organisations, award nominees, the media, and other supporters whose consistent backing has helped sustain the awards and amplify their impact.
