Hisbah cancels TikTok star Mai Wushirya’s wedding

The Kano State Hisbah Board has taken action to cancel the wedding planned between viral TikTok creator Idris Mai Wushirya and fellow content creator Basira Yar Guda, following court intervention and concerns over alleged “immoral” content posted online.

Background: Viral videos and court orders

The two influencers had been posting skits and social-media content which the state’s film and video censorship authorities deemed to be in violation of local codes of morality.

A magistrate court in Kano subsequently ordered the Hisbah Board to arrange their marriage within 60 days—failures to comply would be treated as contempt of court.

In response, the Hisbah Board intervened and announced that the planned wedding would be cancelled.

Hisbah’s role and enforcement

The Hisbah Board functions as the Islamic morality-enforcement body in Kano State. After receiving the court’s directive, it began coordinating with the couples’ families, reportedly inviting parents and arranging prerequisites such as medical tests and drug screening.

However, as the process advanced, the board declined to allow the wedding as initially planned, effectively cancelling it.

Implications for social-media influencers

This development signals a tightening of oversight over digital content creators in Northern Nigeria, particularly where religious or moral concerns are raised.

The case of Mai Wushirya and Yar Guda is being seen as a warning to influencers whose content may be considered provocative or in breach of local regulations.

It remains unclear whether the couple will be re-allowed to marry under supervised conditions, or whether legal proceedings will continue against them for the original content.

The Hisbah Board and the Kano State Films & Video Censorship Board have yet to issue a public detailed statement on the cancellation.
