Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President, has addressed former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s remark that choosing him as a running mate in the 1999 election was the biggest mistake of his presidency, asserting that the past cannot be altered.
In a statement released on Saturday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku labeled Obasanjo’s comments as an unsuccessful attempt to change historical facts. He defended his stand against the controversial third-term agenda during Obasanjo’s presidency, stating that he has no regrets about his actions.

“I am proud to have opposed the third-term agenda and stood by the Constitution of Nigeria. I do not regret thwarting any efforts to undermine our democracy for personal ambition,” he said.
Atiku further remarked that if Obasanjo’s resentment arises from his refusal to back an unconstitutional third term, he considers that resentment a mark of honor.
He emphasized that no one, regardless of their stature or achievements, is greater than Nigeria, affirming the supremacy of the Constitution and his choice to prioritize the country over personal loyalty.
