“I wasn’t detained, just invited for questioning” — Kaduna ADC leader responds to Obi’s arrest allegations

Ahmad Tijani Umar, an Islamic cleric in Kaduna and a leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has refuted claims that he was detained by the State Security Service (SSS).

His statement follows allegations from Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who claimed on Tuesday that Umar was arrested shortly after hosting him on his visit to Kaduna on Sunday.

Obi expressed concern over the alleged arrest, warning about possible threats to freedom of expression and political activity in the country.

In a video released soon after these allegations emerged, Umar clarified that he was not arrested or detained, but rather invited for questioning by the security service.

“I want to set the record straight. I was not detained by the DSS. I was invited for questioning, fully cooperated, and was then allowed to leave. I am safe and in good health,” he stated.

He urged his supporters and the residents of Kaduna State to stay calm and abide by the law, stressing the importance of peace.

“No one should take the law into their own hands or create unrest out of loyalty,” he warned.

Umar also encouraged citizens to express their political concerns through democratic means, notably by participating in elections.

“The solution is straightforward: register, vote, and elect better leaders when the opportunity arises,” he advised.
