Increase of ‘Get-Rich-Quick’ Scams Among Nigerian Youth

Recently, there has been a surge in get-rich-quick schemes on social media, particularly in WhatsApp groups, Twitter, and Facebook, although they have been an ongoing issue for some time. These scams often entice individuals with eye-catching promises like, “Invest 2,000 and receive 30,000” or “Send 2,000 and get 10,000,” misleading many into believing that making money is as simple as it appears.

In a bid to be perceived as the “wealthy one” among their peers, some young people jump into these schemes without considering the possible negative outcomes. The allure of such quick-money tactics has become prevalent among Nigerian youth, especially in a struggling economy, often putting them at risk of being scammed.

As young Nigerians search for financial independence in a country where job opportunities are limited due to high inflation and rising living costs, many unfortunately falls as prey to these fraudulent operations. People feel immense pressure to display financial stability, leading them to engage in dubious activities to keep up with those around them during parties or social gatherings, rather than earning money through honest means.

One individual expressed, “I couldn’t stand the thought of my friends pitying me because I couldn’t afford basic items, so I decided to look for quick ways to make money, like many others.” Both men and women find themselves in this predicament, feeling overwhelmed as they see their peers enjoying a lavish lifestyle.

Another victim shared their experience: “I searched desperately for a job in the city, but nothing worked out. Eventually, I turned to a friend who introduced me to a quick-money scheme from a WhatsApp group I was part of but had never engaged with. My failed job search led me there.” Many don’t think to seek advice from family regarding these risky choices, unaware that although these schemes can offer quick gains, they often lead to significant losses.

A former participant recounted, “I was devastated, I nearly took my own life after losing a large amount of money. My brothers had to help me regain perspective. Since then, I’ve steered clear of such investments. It shattered me.”

Today, countless Nigerian youths are pursuing quick-money solutions, hoping to rapidly increase their investments. However, the harsh reality is that the risks are substantial, and the losses often outweigh any potential rewards.
