Preliminary investigations by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority revealed that the bus was speeding when it crossed into the wrong lane, crashing head-on into a Volkswagen commercial bus en route from Anthony to Palmgroove.

The collision was described as catastrophic, resulting in the immediate death of a female passenger on the Volkswagen bus, and the baby girl later died from injuries. The tragic loss of both victims left the community in mourning and shocked onlookers.

Rescue efforts by LASTMA operatives and concerned citizens swiftly freed ten people, including both drivers, who were trapped in the wreckage. Six of those injured were from the Volkswagen bus, while four were from the Tata bus.

Emergency medical teams took all injured individuals to nearby hospitals for urgent care.

Police from the Ilupeju Division secured the scene, and officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit removed the deceased bodies.

In response to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare Oki expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, especially the mother of the deceased infant, who was also injured. He characterized the accident as a sobering reminder of road dangers and offered prayers for the recovery of the injured.

Bakare Oki cautioned drivers, particularly those operating commercial vehicles, against speeding and neglecting vehicle maintenance. He emphasized the importance of having functional brakes, regular vehicle checks, and following speed limits, highlighting the lethal consequences of reckless driving.

He reiterated LASTMA’s dedication to ensuring traffic safety, effective emergency responses, and ongoing public awareness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
