Iyabo Obasanjo resigns from APC, citing disrespect and marginalization in Ogun

Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, a former Senator for Ogun Central and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially left the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressing concerns over ongoing disrespect and unfair treatment from the party leadership in Ogun State.

In her resignation letter, dated May 31 and directed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, she stated that her choice to resign stemmed from events related to the party’s governorship nomination process for the upcoming 2027 elections.

Obasanjo-Bello, who recently pursued the APC governorship ticket for Ogun, criticized the consensus process that led to Senator Solomon Adeola, also known as Yayi, being named the party’s preferred candidate.

She expressed that she was not consulted and wasn’t included in discussions, despite her public commitment to supporting any consensus decisions made by the party.

She alleged that some of her supporters were barred from entering the venue where Adeola was announced and experienced intimidation.

Obasanjo-Bello noted that Senator Adeola had requested a meeting with her supporters, during which three significant demands were made. She reported that he promised to provide feedback within a week, but over two months later, there had been no response.

“The treatment I’ve endured illustrates a continued pattern of rejection and disrespect. When only disrespect is served, it’s time to leave. Thus, I am departing from the APC table where I am not welcome,” she articulated in her letter.

Despite her issues with the party, the former senator thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Ogun State APC chairman, and the Ogun Central Senatorial District leadership for their kindness during her tenure in the party.

Obasanjo-Bello had only re-entered active politics earlier this year, becoming a member of the APC in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. Her return to politics, marked by campaign billboards appearing across Abeokuta in late 2025, sparked speculation regarding her intentions to run for the governorship in 2027.

As a trained medical doctor, she served as the Ogun State Commissioner for Health from 2003 to 2007 and represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011.

Her resignation is anticipated to ignite new political conversations in Ogun State as the countdown to the 2027 elections progresses.
