The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has backed the state government’s ongoing demolition of illegal structures, saying the exercise is necessary to safeguard lives, promote orderly development, and protect the environment.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, said no responsible government could ignore the dangers posed by unapproved constructions that threaten public safety and disrupt urban planning efforts.

Oladejo emphasised that the demolitions were carried out after a transparent and law-driven process, which included several warnings and engagement sessions with affected parties before enforcement began.
He noted that the operation was not an act of cruelty but a preventive measure aimed at averting future disasters and restoring order in the state’s fast-growing urban areas.

“Every measure taken by this government has been guided by due process and the public interest,” Oladejo said. “Lagos cannot afford to allow illegal developments to thrive, especially when they endanger infrastructure, waterways, and the environment.”
The APC spokesperson commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration for demonstrating “restraint and compassion” by engaging stakeholders and granting several compliance extensions before beginning enforcement.
He added that the government’s actions align with Lagos State’s long-term vision for urban renewal, environmental sustainability, and community safety, stressing that the goal is to build a liveable and resilient megacity.

Oladejo also cautioned against portraying the demolitions as politically motivated, insisting that the campaign is purely in the public interest.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Lagos will not be lectured on governance by those who fail to understand that development requires discipline, consistency, and respect for the rule of law,” he stated.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to infrastructural renewal and compliance with planning regulations, Oladejo stated that the ongoing operations were not punitive but designed to ensure that Lagos grows in line with approved layouts and environmental standards.

“Lagos will continue to uphold lawful governance, ensure strategic urban renewal, and demonstrate genuine compassion,” he added.
