Lagos assembly dismisses Clerk Onafeko, appoints female successor

On Tuesday, the Lagos State House of Assembly officially dismissed Mr. Olalekan Onafeko from his position as Clerk of the House, concluding his over two-year term immediately.

This decision was made during a plenary session after discussions among lawmakers and was confirmed through a voice vote, indicating strong support from Assembly members.

The Speaker, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, who oversaw the meeting, clarified that the action adhered to the Assembly’s rules regarding tenure. He emphasized that Onafeko’s tenure had naturally come to an end and that this decision should not be seen as disciplinary action, but rather as part of standard administrative procedures.

Onafeko had been serving as Clerk since January 14, 2022, during which he managed legislative administration and coordinated Assembly activities. The Speaker acknowledged his contributions, noting that his time in office saw significant legislative developments and institutional progress.

Subsequently, Obasa announced the immediate appointment of Adenike Osinowo as the new Clerk of the House, expressing confidence in her capability to enhance legislative operations through her experience and administrative skills.

Additionally, the House confirmed Latifat Ogbara as Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission, recognizing her qualifications and extensive public service experience as deserving of this role.

Remi Bello was also confirmed as a member of the Commission and was tasked with playing a vital role in ongoing institutional reforms. The House members urged the newly appointed officials to maintain professionalism, transparency, and commitment in their roles.
