The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed the need for society to care for senior citizens, saying old age should not mean being forgotten by the society they helped to build.
Sanwo-Olu spoke during a visit to senior citizens across Badagry Central LGA, Badagry West LCDA and Olorunda LCDA under an elderly support initiative.

She said the outreach was not only about financial assistance but also about showing love, respect and appreciation to older persons.
According to her, simple gestures such as phone calls, visits, companionship and assistance with everyday activities could sometimes mean more to an elderly person than material support.
The First Lady also urged families to take responsibility for caring for ageing parents and relatives rather than leaving the task entirely to government or charitable organisations.

She called on community leaders, religious organisations, youth groups and traditional institutions to identify vulnerable elderly persons, particularly those living alone, and ensure they receive necessary support.
Sanwo-Olu said the initiative had covered the Lagos, Ikorodu, Epe and Badagry divisions, with Ikeja remaining the only division yet to be reached. She added that the programme was driven by compassion and the commitment to ensuring that no one was left behind.

She also acknowledged the elderly support efforts of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, through the Renewed Hope Initiative.
The outreach concluded in Iworo, where Sanwo-Olu visited the Oniworo of Iworo Kingdom, Oba Oladele Friday Kosoko, Ogundeyi II, at the Iworo Central Palace.
The monarch commended the initiative, describing it as a demonstration of compassion and respect for senior citizens. He disclosed that he had been providing monthly stipends to some elderly residents of the community since ascending the throne.
He expressed appreciation to the First Lady for extending the intervention to Iworo and pledged continued support for initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of elderly and vulnerable residents.
