In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo acknowledged the discomfort and disruptions caused by the floods, noting that as a coastal city, Lagos remains naturally vulnerable to such incidents.

He highlighted specific cases, including Kusenla, where a technical challenge has been identified.

“The downstream is about 1.2 meters higher than the invert of the existing drainage, as confirmed by the survey conducted for the ongoing project awarded by the State government at the end of Kusenla Road, which includes a pumping station,” Wahab said.

The commissioner also pointed to illegal construction on flood plains and dumping of refuse into drains as key factors behind flooding around House on the Rock Church.

He warned that infractions of this nature worsen flooding incidents and will no longer be tolerated.

“In several of the videos shared yesterday, clear infractions were observed. The Lagos State Government will ensure that such illegal structures and obstructions are promptly removed, including illegal reclamations carried out without the requisite Environmental Impact Assessment and Drainage Clearance,” Wahab stated.

While assuring residents that most of the water had receded by Wednesday morning, Wahab appealed for public cooperation in maintaining a flood-free Lagos.

“The Ministry remains committed to strengthening our flood management systems, but this effort requires the support and responsible actions of all Lagosians. Together, we can build a safer, cleaner, and more resilient Lagos,” Wahab added.
