Speaking on the theme, “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities,” Akodu said environmental cleanliness required collective responsibility from government, residents and the private sector.

He called for stronger partnerships with schools, businesses, non-governmental organisations and community groups to promote waste reduction, recycling, resource recovery and proper disposal.

Akodu also stressed the importance of youth participation in environmental sustainability, urging continued support for youth-led environmental initiatives and stronger enforcement against pollution.

He said World Cleanup Day should not be treated as a one-day activity but as a reminder for Lagosians to make environmental responsibility part of their daily lives.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen, said the journey to a cleaner city begins at home through choices such as reducing food waste, sorting waste at source and preventing littering.

Gaji said Lagos’ source-segregation and circular economy initiatives could improve waste management, keep drainage channels clear, create green jobs and turn waste into economic resources.

The guest lecturer and Founder of FABE International, Mrs. Temitope Okunnu, also advocated better management of food waste, saying organic waste from homes, markets and restaurants could be converted into compost and organic fertiliser.

She called for collaboration among government, farmers, market associations, waste managers, businesses and communities to develop a sustainable food-waste management system.

The event was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Engr. Mahamood Adegbite, heads of agencies and directors in the ministry, among others.
