Lagos history incomplete without Akran of Badagry — Jandor

Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran, known as Jandor and a former governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, has honored the late Akran of Badagry Kingdom, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, calling him a vital figure in Lagos history with a timeless legacy.

During a condolence visit to the late monarch’s palace on Saturday, Jandor paid homage to the respected leader who died on January 12 at the age of 89. He highlighted that the late Akran, who also served as the Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, epitomized peace, unity, and progress, not just for Badagry but for all of Lagos State.

He emphasized that the monarch’s passing should be viewed as a celebration of a life dedicated to serving humanity and preserving culture. Jandor expressed personal sorrow over the loss, as a native of the area, and mentioned that the history of Lagos cannot ignore the contributions of De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, who was a key advocate for peace and development.

Jandor regarded the late Akran as more than a king, describing him as a father figure and a source of unity that fostered harmony in Badagry and beyond. He reminisced about the royal blessings he received during the campaign for the 2023 governorship elections, stating that these memories and the monarch’s impact would be cherished.

Additionally, Jandor praised both the federal and Lagos State governments for their efforts in Badagry while urging for more intentional measures to establish the town as Nigeria’s tourism center. He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for approving the construction of a new palace for the Akran of Badagry and for road improvement projects, asserting that these initiatives could enhance Badagry’s cultural and economic importance.

In response to Jandor’s visit, Chief Antony Tose, representing the palace, expressed gratitude for the acknowledgment of the late Akran’s significant contributions to Badagry and Lagos State. Tose also voiced support for Jandor’s gubernatorial aspirations, suggesting that it is time for Badagry to have its own governor.

Prince Adetunji Akran, the Olori-Ebi of the Akran family, thanked Jandor for standing with the family during their time of loss. As part of his visit, Jandor also paid respects to Hon Babatunde Hunpe, Chairman of Badagry Local Government, who regarded the visit as a demonstration of respect for the traditional institution and the obligation of political leaders to support the community and the throne in times of grief.
