Lagos Police command to arraign NURTW’s leader over alleged killing

The Lagos State Police Command has announced that they will bring a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, known as Shameleon, to court on Friday regarding the suspected murder of a dispatch rider on Lagos Island.

Adio, who is 55 years old, was taken into custody after a violent confrontation occurred on September 17, 2025, on Tapa Street in Lagos Island. Witnesses reported that the incident escalated when the dispatch rider allegedly scraped Adio’s vehicle, leading Adio and several associates to assault the rider. They reportedly struck him with a helmet and their fists until he fell unconscious.

The victim was taken to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Bababseyi Oluseyi, confirmed this information, detailing that Adio is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti-Yaba and will officially face charges in court on Friday.

However, the Lagos State House of Assembly has expressed outrage over the incident. The Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Hon. Adewale Adedeji, condemned the killing in strong terms, insisting that Adio and his accomplices must face justice.

“This is tragic. A dispatch rider who left home to earn a living for himself never returned because someone who thinks he is above the law decided to take his life,” Adedeji said. “The sanctity of human life has no alternative. Shamsideen’s case must be handled properly to serve as a deterrent.”
