Situated on Gberefu Island, the Point of No Return stands as one of Africa’s most poignant symbols of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This site, marked by two distinct slanted poles overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, served as the final departure point for countless enslaved Africans bound for the Americas, who would never return to their homeland. Today, it remains a solemn reminder of that painful history.
“I’m delighted to announce that Mr. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, have approved the reconstruction of the Point of No Return in Badagry. This project will boost our tourism industry and preserve our historical heritage,” he wrote.
He also reassured residents and stakeholders that he would keep pushing for initiatives that showcase Badagry’s rich history and foster sustainable economic development.
The renovation of the Point of No Return is anticipated to enhance Badagry’s status as a top heritage tourism spot in Africa, opening up new avenues for investment, job opportunities, and cultural education.
With this endorsement, the Lagos State Government has once again demonstrated its dedication to safeguarding historical landmarks and promoting tourism as a key component of the state’s economy.
