The Lagos State Government has trained over 130 sewage treatment plant (STP) managers, engineers and other environmental professionals as part of efforts to improve wastewater management and protect public health.
The two-day training was organised by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) in collaboration with the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE).

Declaring the workshop open, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, said the growing volume of wastewater from residential, commercial and industrial activities made effective wastewater management a priority.
Wahab said poorly treated wastewater and indiscriminate discharge could contaminate water bodies and pose serious risks to public health and the environment.

He stressed that sewage treatment plants required competent personnel, regular maintenance, process monitoring, laboratory testing and proper documentation to operate effectively.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Adegbite Mahamood, said investment in wastewater infrastructure must be matched with investment in the people responsible for operating and maintaining the facilities.
He noted that constructing a sewage treatment plant alone does not guarantee effective treatment, urging facility managers to strengthen preventive maintenance, monitor operations and ensure compliance with environmental standards.
The General Manager of LSWMO, Adefemi Afolabi, said the training covered treatment processes, plant operation and maintenance, laboratory analysis, effluent parameters, wastewater microbiology and process optimisation.
He added that bringing together facility managers, engineers, environmental consultants, HSE professionals and laboratory personnel would promote knowledge sharing and help address operational challenges in the sector.

The NIEE National Chairman, Caius Ikem Umekesiobi, represented by the Immediate Past National Chairman, Nureni Adegboyega Ogunyemi, called for sustained professional development and improved operation and maintenance models for sewage treatment facilities.
The training featured technical presentations, interactive sessions and practical exercises designed to improve participants’ capacity to operate STPs efficiently and ensure safer wastewater management across Lagos State.
