While speaking to The Lagos Voice, graduates from different departments reflected on what it means to belong to the university’s historic first set and the lessons they will carry into the future.
For Osodein Mathew Dolapo of the Department of Mathematical Sciences (Statistics Unit), being a pioneer meant laying the foundation for generations of students to come. He described the experience as one filled with pride despite the challenges of navigating university life without senior students to guide them.
“We didn’t just come to get a degree; we came to build a name and a legacy for this university,” he said, adding that the challenges they faced strengthened their resilience and taught them valuable lessons in independence, problem solving, and leadership. According to him, the experience inspired him to become someone who creates opportunities rather than waits for them.

Apena Idayah of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture shared a similar perspective. She described being part of the pioneer graduating class as being part of history, noting that the conduct and achievements of the first graduates will influence how the university is perceived in the years ahead.
While admitting that the responsibility comes with pressure, she said it also brings pride because they are setting the standard for future students. She explained that adapting to change and overcoming uncertainty helped her become more confident, resilient, and determined to pursue excellence in her career while making meaningful contributions to society.
For Bisiriyu Hassan Taiwo of the Department of Mass Communication, the pioneer experience went beyond academics. He recalled that students had to help shape the university’s culture by contributing ideas, supporting new initiatives, and creating traditions that would define campus life.

He said the responsibility of representing the university after graduation motivates him to uphold its reputation. Reflecting on his most memorable experiences, he highlighted the spirit of collaboration among students, student leaders, and staff during the institution’s formative years.
According to him, those experiences proved that growth is not always easy but that lasting achievements are built through teamwork, resilience, and a shared commitment to progress.
Although their experiences differ, the graduates share a common belief that being part of LASUSTECH’s pioneer set is a lifelong badge of honour. They expressed confidence that the values of resilience, leadership, innovation, and service developed during their time at the university will guide them as they begin the next phase of their lives and careers.
