He noted that water is fundamental to life and stressed the importance of monitoring what residents consume, particularly in a rapidly developing council area like Ibeju-Lekki. Hon.

Olowa commended Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for prioritising water safety across the state and urged stakeholders to fully engage with the discussions and comply with regulatory guidelines.

In her address, the Executive Secretary of LASWARCO, Mrs. Oluwabukola Khadijah Adeyemo, warned that despite Lagos being surrounded by water, much of it is unsafe for direct consumption due to contamination.

She highlighted issues such as saltwater intrusion, heavy metals, poor handling practices, and indiscriminate drilling of boreholes close to septic tanks and soak-aways. According to her, these practices significantly increase the risk of waterborne diseases including cholera, typhoid fever, and diarrhoea.

“This programme marks our commitment to bridging the gap between awareness and compliance in fast-growing areas like Ibeju-Lekki,” Mrs. Adeyemo said. “Safe water is life, but poorly managed water can become a silent threat to public health and the environment.”
