Meet Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba: Aston Villa’s ‘Shy’ Hero on the European Stage

Jimoh-Aloba

Aston Villa’s dramatic European comeback was sealed by a teenager described by his teammate Morgan Rogers as “shy and nervous.” But on Thursday night, 19-year-old Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba made a name for himself with a decisive late goal.

The young midfielder’s strike secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Red Bull Salzburg, helping Villa clinch second place in the Europa League group stage. As the final whistle blew, Amadou Onana proudly guided Jimoh-Aloba towards the Holte End, where he was met with roaring approval from the home crowd for every fist pump.

The stage was set for an unlikely hero. With star striker Ollie Watkins forced off with a hamstring injury in the first half and Villa trailing 2-0 early in the second, Unai Emery’s side was in desperate need of inspiration.

Jimoh-Aloba, who only made his Premier League debut last month, was brought on in the 66th minute. After goals from Rogers and Tyrone Mings levelled the score, he delivered a superb winner with just three minutes left on the clock.

“It’s a proud moment for me on my European debut,” Jimoh-Aloba told TNT Sports. “Really nice to make my family proud. I’ve had a lot of lows this season and a lot of highs but this is top. My mum is in the stand somewhere.”

‘He Shows His Quality in Training’

Playmaker Morgan Rogers, who was in the West Bromwich Albion academy alongside Jimoh-Aloba, is confident the young talent will grow in confidence.

“It’s a really nice moment for him; he works hard in training and gives his all,” Rogers told BBC Sport. “He is probably a bit shy and nervous more than I’d like, but he shows his quality in training.”

“We know he’s got the ability; it’s about applying himself. I knew he was locked in and engaged, and that’s what we want from him,” Rogers added. “He was focused the moment he came on, and it was a really nice moment for him. I’ve taken a shine to him; he’s a really nice kid, and we like when we train with him and want him to do well.”

With key midfielders Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn, and Youri Tielemans sidelined, manager Unai Emery also gave 18-year-old George Hemmings his full debut, while fellow academy graduate Kadan Young also featured from the bench.

“It’s very important to have chances to play the young players, the opportunity for them to show their progress. I think they did a very good job,” Emery stated. “We have a plan with them. We need to protect them when they are playing… It was fantastic how we did everything.”

Who is Jimoh-Aloba?

The promising attacking midfielder joined Aston Villa from local rivals West Brom in 2023 at the age of 16, having already represented England at the U16 and U17 levels.

He made his senior debut in a Carabao Cup victory over Wycombe in September 2024 and was named in a Premier League squad for the first time a year ago. After signing a long-term contract in October 2024, he played a key role in Villa’s FA Youth Cup triumph last season, even scoring in the final against Manchester City.

His Premier League bow came last month in a 4-1 loss to Arsenal, and he also appeared in the Carabao Cup defeat to Brentford earlier this season.
