The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has detained two suspects involved in the production of counterfeit alcoholic beverages after uncovering and shutting down two illegal production sites in the Mushin area of Lagos State.
The individuals, named Uchenna Ekezie and Peter Okparalgbo, were arrested during separate enforcement actions carried out by the Agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate.

On Monday, July 20, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, the Director of Investigation and Enforcement at NAFDAC, confirmed their arrests to the media, stating that significant quantities of suspected counterfeit alcoholic drinks, including well-known local and international brands, had been seized from shops, storage facilities, and an illegal production site.
Among the confiscated products were Hennessy, William Lawson’s, Don Julio, Martell, Rémy Martin, Flirt Vodka, Lords Gin, Imperial Blue, Gordon’s, Jack Daniel’s, Best Whisky, Eagle Gin, Aman Tequila, The Macallan Scotch Whisky, Casmero Whisky, 501, and Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
Authorities also seized bottles, labels, packaging materials, and equipment used in the illegal production of these counterfeit drinks.

According to Iluyomade, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the manufacturing of counterfeit alcoholic beverages during questioning, and all seized products and production equipment have been secured as evidence for ongoing investigations leading to prosecution.

In a separate enforcement action, the Agency discovered over 450 cartons of expired salad cream at two different locations in Oke Arin Market, Lagos. The expired items, some dating back to 2024, were promptly removed to prevent them from being sold to unsuspecting consumers.
The Agency has also summoned the owner of the expired products for questioning, and multiple shops that were found to be selling unregistered and banned items or operating under inadequate storage conditions have been closed pending further investigation.
