Nigeria’s power crisis is driven by governance issues more than technology — New minister Tegbe

Joseph Tegbe, Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Power, has pointed out that the primary barrier to progress in the country’s electricity sector is poor governance rather than technological failures.

During his first official meeting with the heads of agencies within the Ministry of Power on Tuesday, Tegbe recognized the longstanding challenges affecting power generation, transmission, and distribution across Nigeria.

He noted that while there are indeed technical problems, they represent only a minor aspect of the sector’s difficulties, with governance issues being the more significant threat to achieving a reliable electricity supply.

“This sector is faced with critical challenges. Technical problems make up only a small portion of these challenges. The main issue is governance. No single agency, department, or unit can tackle the problems in this sector independently,” emphasized Tegbe.
