The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to initiate discussions with the Federal Government regarding a new national minimum wage, as it claims the existing wage of N70,000 is no longer viable.
During the Rights of Workers Summit in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, NLC President Joe Ajaero, represented by Deputy President Audu Titus Amba, urged workers to get ready for upcoming negotiations.

He emphasized that the current minimum wage fails to meet the fundamental needs of workers due to escalating inflation and living costs.
“Anything less than N500,000 is insufficient for workers. The existing minimum wage is overdue for reevaluation, and we will soon commence negotiations with the government,” he stated.

Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo, represented by Secretary-General Nuhu Toro, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that deteriorating economic conditions have diminished workers’ purchasing power. He pointed to increasing prices for food, transportation, rent, and inflation as factors contributing to the inadequacy of the current wage.
President Tinubu signed the law for the current national minimum wage of N70,000 on July 29, 2024, which raised the wage from N30,000 per month.
This legislation was the result of negotiations with organized labor and included a mandate for reviewing the wage structure every three years.
