Minister of Defence Christopher Musa has stated that Nigeria cannot ensure peaceful elections in 2027 solely through security measures if politicians choose to engage in violence.
Addressing attendees at the eighth Blueprint Newspaper Lecture and Awards via his Senior Special Adviser on Policy and Strategy, Maj.-Gen. Olufemi Akinjobi (retd.), Musa emphasized that political parties need to prioritize the nation’s interests and view elections as a democratic process rather than a battleground.

He remarked, “A security framework, no matter how advanced, cannot guarantee peaceful elections if political figures opt for violence instead of dialogue. Electoral laws will fail if misinformation is allowed to supplant facts, and democratic institutions cannot thrive when citizens lose trust in the law.”
Musa highlighted the shared responsibility in this matter, urging political parties to prioritize national wellbeing over partisan gains, and for candidates to understand that political rivalry is not a conflict.
He also outlined a six-point strategy for election security leading up to 2027, focusing on intelligence sharing, threat evaluations, protection of digital systems, cyber resilience, civil-military cooperation, and effective communications.
