On Friday, the city of Ibadan witnessed history as Oba Rashidi Ladoja was crowned as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The sprawling, historic city of Ibadan, a cradle of Yoruba civilisation and a political powerhouse in Nigeria, recently witnessed a significant transition in its traditional leadership.

At the heart of this change is Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a man whose life story reads like a compelling political thriller interspersed with significant professional achievements and a dramatic ascent to one of the most revered thrones in Yorubaland.

From his early days as a chemical engineer to a prominent politician, a former governor, and now the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Ladoja’s journey is one of resilience, controversy, and ultimate triumph.

Ladoja’s Early Life and Education

Born on September 25, 1944, in Gambari village, near Ibadan, then part of British Nigeria, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja’s roots are firmly planted in the rich soil of Ibadanland.

His father, Alhaji Aruna Ladoja, was a successful cocoa trader, a testament to Ibadan’s commercial vibrancy. At the same time, his mother, Alhaja Haleemat Ladoja, was a respected community leader known for her philanthropy. These early influences likely instilled in young Rashidi a blend of entrepreneurial spirit and a sense of social responsibility.

A steady progression marked Ladoja’s educational journey through some of Nigeria’s reputable institutions before venturing abroad for higher learning.

He attended Ibadan Boys High School from 1958 to 1963 and later Olivet Baptist High School from 1964 to 1965.5. Demonstrating an inclination towards scientific pursuits, he then travelled to Belgium, enrolling at the prestigious University of Liège from 1966 to 1972, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. This academic background laid a robust foundation for what would become a diverse and impactful career.

Professional Zenith: From Engineer to Entrepreneur

Upon returning to Nigeria after his studies, Ladoja immediately put his engineering expertise to use. He joined Total Nigeria, a multinational oil and gas company, where he dedicated 13 years of service.

His tenure at Total, a highly structured and demanding environment, undoubtedly honed his leadership skills, strategic thinking, and understanding of large-scale operations.

In 1985, Ladoja transitioned from corporate life to the dynamic world of private business. This move marked a significant turning point, allowing him to diversify his interests and establish himself as a formidable entrepreneur.

His business portfolio grew to encompass various sectors, including shipping, manufacturing, banking, agriculture, and transportation. By the turn of the millennium, his influence in the financial sector was evident as he became a director at Standard Trust Bank Limited, showcasing his acumen across multiple industries.

This period of his life illustrated a man unafraid to take calculated risks and expand his horizons beyond conventional career paths.

Ladejo’s Political career: Senator and Governor

Ladoja’s entry into politics was as impactful as his business ventures. In 1993, he was elected to the Senate of Nigeria, representing Oyo South. Although this period was short-lived due to the political instability of the Nigerian Third Republic, it provided him with a crucial insight into the machinations of national governance.

However, it was his ambition for the governorship of Oyo State that truly thrust him into the political limelight. As a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he successfully contested and assumed office as the Governor of Oyo State on May 29, 2003.

His governorship, however, was far from smooth. He served from May 29, 2003, to January 12, 2006, when he was controversially impeached. This impeachment sparked a legal battle that underscored the fragility of democratic institutions in Nigeria at the time.

In a significant judicial victory, both the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court declared his impeachment null and illegal, paving the way for his return to office.10 He was reinstated and served a second, shorter term from December 12, 2006, to May 29, 2007. Despite the turbulence, Ladoja’s political resilience was undeniable.

Throughout his political career, he demonstrated a willingness to align with various political platforms, including the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP), Accord Party, African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), highlighting his pragmatic approach to achieving political objectives.

Family Life: A Pillar of Support

Behind every public figure is a personal life that provides a foundation and respite from the rigours of public service. Oba Rashidi Ladoja is a family man, with his family playing a significant role throughout his career.

He is married to Alhaja Mutiat Olayinka Ladoja, among other spouses, and Bolatito Ladoja. He is a father to several children, including Kamorudeen, Bashirat, Omotola, Adetokunbo, Azeez, and Rasheed, who have often been seen supporting his endeavours.

The Ascent to the Throne: Oba Rashidi Ladoja, The Olubadan

Beyond the political and legal battles, Rashidi Ladoja’s most recent and perhaps most profound achievement is his ascent to the revered throne of the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

This journey began decades ago through the traditional chieftaincy lines. Ibadan’s unique rotational system, alternating between the Olubadan and Balogun lines, is a meticulously structured path to the kingship.

Ladoja began his journey by becoming the Mogaji of the Ladoja family in the 1980s, the first crucial step. He then systematically progressed through the chieftaincy ranks, becoming the Jagun Olubadan on October 1, 1993, the initial rung on the Egbe Agba (civilian) line.

Through diligent service and adherence to tradition, he was elevated to Otun Olubadan in 2022, a position that is second only to the Olubadan and the highest-ranking chief on the Egbe Agba line.

The final steps to the throne accelerated with the passing of the previous Olubadan. On August 12, 2024, he received a ceremonial beaded crown, a significant symbol of his impending kingship.

Subsequently, on August 21, 2025, he was officially approved as the 44th Olubadan-designate following the death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

His formal coronation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland was slated for September 26, 2025, a day that etched his name into the annals of Ibadan’s history.

Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, at 81 years old, has lived a life of remarkable breadth and depth.21 From a highly educated chemical engineer to a successful entrepreneur, a senator, a two-time governor, and finally, a revered traditional ruler, his story embodies the spirit of endurance. Despite facing political impeachments and prolonged legal battles, he has consistently demonstrated resilience and an unwavering commitment to his aspirations. As the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Ladoja now carries the responsibility of guiding one of Nigeria’s most significant traditional institutions, a role that will undoubtedly be as impactful and eventful as the rest of his extraordinary life.
