The Osun State government, in collaboration with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), has announced a free train service for its citizens traveling from Lagos for the Eid-el-Fitr holiday.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NRC Public Relations Officer Calistus Unyimadu confirmed the initiative, dubbed the “Imole Special Train.” The service will operate on the narrow-gauge line, transporting passengers from the Iddo station in Lagos to Osogbo at no charge.

Unyimadu clarified that the Osun State government is fully sponsoring the “Sallah programme,” with the NRC providing the necessary rolling stock, operational services, and technical support.

To accommodate the expected surge in travel during the festive period, the NRC has also scheduled additional services across its major routes.

The Lagos-Ibadan Train Service (LITS) will run three trips on March 19. Departures from Mobolaji Johnson station in Ebute Metta are set for 7:40 a.m., 1:40 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. Return trips from Obafemi Awolowo station in Moniya will leave at 8:00 a.m., 10:50 a.m., and 4:30 p.m.
On the Abuja-Kaduna route, two trips are scheduled for March 19, increasing to three daily trips from March 20 to 23.

The Warri-Itakpe service will maintain its three-times-weekly schedule. Trains will depart from Warri at 8:00 a.m. on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, and from Itakpe at 12:00 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, with Thursdays reserved for maintenance.
Meanwhile, the Port Harcourt-Aba train service will continue its regular schedule throughout the holiday period. The NRC has assured all passengers of safe and reliable travel and encouraged Nigerians to utilize rail transport for their festive journeys.
The announcement comes as the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, confirmed on Wednesday that the Shawwal moon had not yet been sighted in Nigeria, indicating that Eid-el-Fitr will be observed on Friday, March 20.
