Outrage over Oyo WAEC candidates undertaking WASSCE practical exam in darkness

There has been significant outcry after students in Oyo State sitting for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) were allegedly compelled to conduct their Agricultural Science practical exam at night without any lighting.

A video revealed candidates conducting their exam in dark conditions, with several using lanterns and phone flashlights to assist in completing their practical work.

This situation has provoked anger among parents and stakeholders, who are questioning the environment in which the students were required to take the exam. Many expressed worries about the candidates’ safety and well-being, particularly due to the timing of the examination.

In response, Pastor S.O. Solarin criticized the late arrival of exam materials at several centers. He noted that this delay kept candidates at their exam locations for hours past the scheduled time.

In a video shared on his Facebook page, Solarin highlighted that some students had to wait for extended periods before receiving their examination papers, forcing them to remain at the centers until nightfall.

He characterized the situation as alarming, especially against the backdrop of the country’s ongoing security issues, including kidnappings and attacks reported in various areas.

“It has come to our attention that some students taking WAEC only received their examination papers now. Given the security situation in the country, WAEC officials must clarify why students are being held at examination centers so late,” he stated.

Solarin urged the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to provide explanations to parents, schools, and affected communities, while many Nigerians continue to call for better planning to avoid similar incidents in the future.
