A 70-year-old man, Okon Akpan, and three other individuals have been arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command in connection with alleged attempted murder and cult activities in the Uruk Anam Local Government Area.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the arrests in a statement released in Uyo on Friday. She stated that the operation was part of a sustained effort to eliminate violent crime in the state and was prompted by credible intelligence.

The other suspects were identified as 45-year-old John Samson, 50-year-old Emmanuel Asuquo, and 22-year-old Idorenyin Umoh. They were apprehended on March 20, 2026, in Ikot Asukpong Village.
According to the police statement, the arrests followed an approved petition concerning allegations of attempted murder, malicious damage, and cultism in the area.

“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded a significant operational breakthrough in its sustained efforts to rid the state of violent crimes and criminal elements,” the statement read. “Acting on credible intelligence, detectives successfully apprehended four suspects on March 20, 2026, at Ikot Asukpong Village in Uruk Anam Local Government Area.”
During the operation, officers recovered one locally made pistol and two long guns, which police say support the allegations of the suspects’ involvement in violent and illegal activities.
The spokesperson added that the investigation is ongoing to locate other members of the suspected gang. She assured the public that proactive measures are in place to maintain peace in the community.

“The command wishes to assure members of the public that the situation in the area remains calm and under control,” the statement continued. “Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.”
Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare reaffirmed the command’s dedication to protecting lives and property throughout the state. He called on the public to assist law enforcement by providing timely and credible information to help combat crime.
