Former Senator of Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has urged the Federal Government and other relevant bodies to change the title of Local Government “Chairman” to “Mayor.”
In a post on Facebook this past Sunday, Sani contended that the term “Chairman” is more fitting for a committee position rather than an executive role, emphasizing that it undermines the significance of local governments, which are the third level of governance in the country.

“The title of Local Government ‘Chairman’ should be changed to ‘Mayor.’ The current nomenclature doesn’t capture the executive nature of the position and makes little sense,” he wrote.
He argued that adopting the title “Mayor,” similar to practices in many democracies, would enhance the prestige of the office and align Nigeria’s local government framework with international norms.
This request comes amid ongoing discussions nationwide regarding local government autonomy, funding, and operational effectiveness.
The vocal former senator, known for his candid opinions on governance and reform, asserted that titles carry substantial meaning and impact the public’s perception of governmental roles.
