The Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, confirmed the news in a formal condolence message, describing Hon. Mayabikan as “a humble, cheerful, friendly, and easy-going” representative who passed away in the early hours of today, September 21, 2025.

“We regret to announce the shocking death of a… Councillor representative from Ward F—Bajulaiye-Folagoro, Hon. Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan.

“This painful news has indeed sent a shockwave of sorrow through our community, as it was never expected or foreseen,” the statement read.

A Troubling trend of loss

Hon. Mayabikan’s death follows the passing of two other female councilors in quick succession last month. Hon. Oluwakemi Rufai of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government died on August 13, 2025, a mere two weeks after being sworn into office.

Just six days later, Hon. Zainab Kosoko Shotayo, from Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), also passed away after a brief illness.

The swift and unexpected nature of these three deaths has raised concerns within the Lagos political scene. While the cause of death for Hon. Mayabikan was not disclosed, her passing, along with the two other councilors, has been a major blow to their respective local governments and the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party they all represented.

Community in Mourning

On behalf of the Somolu community and the APC, Hon. Ashimi extended his deepest condolences to Mayabikan’s family, her legislative colleagues, and her constituents.

When it is time, God will call for the soul of each person;it has nothing do with what you are doing at that time or where you belong to.It is a Clarion call on everyone to be good to everyone,be humble, polite, honest, trustworthy, patient, endure, tolerate others and forgive them. You will find your hereafter pleasing.
