Former Nigeria striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has admitted he would find it difficult to score goals in the present Super Eagles squad due to what he described as the team’s lack of creativity in midfield.

Speaking on Sunday Oliseh’s podcast, the 42-year-old reflected on Nigeria’s shaky campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where the Super Eagles have managed just nine goals in eight matches, conceding seven, and currently sit in a precarious third place.
Yakubu, fondly known as The Yak, expressed concern over the absence of a playmaker capable of linking midfield to attack.

“When we look at the team, we have too many defensive midfielders. We don’t have a creative midfielder. If I play in this team, I’ll struggle to score goals. I’m telling you because when you look at Osimhen when he plays, he’s fighting because he knows already,” he said.
The former Everton striker added that the Eagles’ style of play hampers attacking productivity.
“We don’t have a midfielder who can pass the ball. We always pass the ball sideways. We cannot string six passes or seven passes. When we pass the ball a bit, then we kick it long. We cannot build a team like this,” he added.

Yakubu remains Nigeria’s fourth all-time highest goal scorer, netting 21 goals in 55 appearances between 2000 and 2012.
