Super Eagles forward Akor Adams has revealed that his first-ever goal at the Africa Cup of Nations was an emotional dedication to his mother, who was hospitalised just hours before Nigeria’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Mozambique.
The 25-year-old striker found the back of the net in the 70th minute of Monday’s Round of 16 clash, capping a dominant display by the Super Eagles and sealing their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 AFCON.

Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after the match, Adams explained that the goal carried special meaning beyond football.
“Glory to God for my first AFCON goal, which I know many of you have been waiting for,” Adams said. “But this goal is dedicated to my mum. She was supposed to be here, but she’s in the hospital right now. She was admitted this morning, but she’s much better now.”
Adams played a crucial role throughout the encounter, not only scoring but also assisting Ademola Lookman’s opener and contributing to the build-up for Victor Osimhen’s goal. His all-round performance underlined his growing importance in the Super Eagles squad.
The strike against Mozambique takes Adams’ international tally to three goals and three assists in eight appearances for Nigeria. He previously announced himself on the international stage in October 2025, scoring on his debut during a 2-1 World Cup qualifying victory over Lesotho.
Nigeria’s comprehensive win further strengthened their credentials as AFCON title contenders, while Adams’ emotional revelation added a human touch to an already memorable night for the Super Eagles.
