A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Jibrin Okutepa, has described the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as “the best appointment President Bola Tinubu has made so far.”

Okutepa made this remark while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he assessed the new INEC leadership following the completion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure.

“In fact, I can say that it’s the best appointment President Tinubu has ever made.”

Okutepa, however, cautioned the newly appointed INEC boss against external influence, urging him to resist corruption and focus on rebuilding trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.

He also clarified reports suggesting that Amupitan had previously served on President Tinubu’s legal team during the 2023 election petitions, stating that “Professor Amupitan was never part of Tinubu’s legal defence team.”

The appointment of Prof Amupitan, a respected legal scholar and former Dean of Law at the University of Jos, has generated nationwide discussion, with many observers viewing it as a pivotal step toward reforming Nigeria’s electoral body.
