Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has voiced deep concern over what he describes as a growing sense of hopelessness among young Nigerians amid rising hardship, bad governance, and electoral distrust.
Atiku, in a post on his official Facebook page on Sunday, lamented that many young citizens now express disillusionment about the country’s direction and their faith in democratic institutions.

What Atiku said
“I am extremely concerned at how young Nigerians are losing hope about the future of our country,” Atiku wrote.
According to the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his numerous interactions with young people reveal widespread frustration over fraudulent elections, poor governance, and economic hardship.

“Every time they come to have a conversation with me about bad governance, fraudulent elections, and resultant hardship being faced by citizens, I deeply feel sad about the situation,” he said.
Encourages Youth Participation in 2027 Elections
Atiku revealed that he recently met with a delegation of youths from the 19 northern states, led by Alhaji Adamu Bappa Gombe, who expressed concern that their votes no longer count.

“I have continued to encourage them not to give up. I told them the change they desire can only come through the ballot,” Atiku said, urging the youths to mobilise their peers to actively participate in the 2027 general elections.
He emphasised that voter apathy remains a major obstacle to democratic reform, noting that the country’s consistent 25 to 30 percent voter turnout rate is “not encouraging.”
Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing democratic reforms and defending Nigeria’s political space from what he termed “anti-democratic forces.”
“I reminded them that the change they desire cannot be attained by voter apathy. On our part, we shall not relent until Nigeria is recovered from anti-democratic forces,” he concluded.
