UBEC revitalizes Lagos Girls’ School, Pledges Bus and Smart Boards

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has completed the rehabilitation of the Alternative High School for Girls in Agboju, Lagos State, and has committed to providing the institution with a school bus and digital smart boards by the end of 2026.

Dr. Aisha Garba, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, made the announcement during the official commissioning of the renovated school. She explained that the project, executed through UBEC’s direct intervention program, was more than just an infrastructure upgrade. Garba described it as a renewed opportunity for girls and young women whose education had been interrupted for various reasons.

She emphasized that no child’s circumstances should be a barrier to quality education, stating that every Nigerian child deserves the chance to learn, develop their skills, and reach their full potential.

Garba asserted that girls who have dropped out of school should not be seen as lost causes, and young mothers wishing to resume their education should not be discouraged. “A girl whose circumstances prevented her from completing her education should be given another opportunity,” she said. “Every child deserves an alternative pathway to acquire the education they need to succeed in life.”

The Executive Secretary noted that the Alternative High School for Girls was founded to offer a second chance for learning, skill acquisition, and the pursuit of productive lives. She urged the school’s management to cultivate an environment where students can rebuild their confidence and find new hope for the future.

“Let this not simply be a place where girls attend classes,” Garba urged. “Let it be a place where hope is restored, confidence is built, and the future is renewed.”

The UBEC head commended President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing education and human capital development under his Renewed Hope Agenda. She also praised the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her dedication to empowering girls and young women through education.

Representing the First Lady at the event, Garba highlighted that this support underscores the importance of ensuring every girl has the opportunity to learn and thrive. She added that the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, is actively pursuing reforms to enhance educational quality, broaden access, and ensure no child is left behind.

The rehabilitation project included upgrades to school infrastructure, academic facilities, furniture, ICT equipment, laboratories, vocational tools, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities. “We believe that investment in education should be visible, not only in figures and reports, but in the classrooms where children learn, in the facilities they use and, most importantly, in the lives they are able to transform,” Garba stated.

UBEC has formally handed over the facility to the Lagos State Government, urging the state to maintain the investment and ensure the school continues to serve its intended purpose. Garba also revealed that a second Alternative High School for Girls in Ikorodu is nearing completion, which will further expand educational opportunities.

She stressed that the project’s ultimate success will be measured by its impact on the students’ lives, not just the appearance of the buildings. “The true measure of our success will be the girl who walks through these gates and discovers that she still has a future,” she concluded. “It will be the girl who acquires a skill, finds employment, starts a business or becomes a leader in her community. That is why this investment matters.”
