UK considers banning X over Al-generated nude images of women and children

The UK is considering a ban on the social media platform X due to reports that its AI chatbot, Grok, has been used to create nude images of women and children.

According to a report from The Telegraph on January 8, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged media regulator Ofcom to examine “all options” after learning about the generation of such images through the platform’s AI tools.

Starmer reacted strongly, calling the situation unacceptable and labeling the content as “disgraceful” and “intolerable,” demanding that X act quickly to remove the inappropriate material or face repercussions.

The UK’s Online Safety Act of 2023 grants the government extensive powers to regulate harmful online content, particularly involving children. This legislation enables authorities to restrict or entirely ban platforms that fail to remove illegal content, such as child abuse material and non-consensual explicit images.

X, formerly known as Twitter, has approximately 650 million users worldwide, including around 20 million in the UK.

Elon Musk, the owner of X, responded by sharing a post that warns against the possible ban, asserting that the platform is the top news source in the UK. He has also criticized the Online Safety Act, claiming it aims to restrict free speech.

In the meantime, Ofcom has confirmed it is investigating X and has reached out to the company urgently. However, any potential ban would require a comprehensive legal process, including a formal investigation.

If X fails to address concerns raised by the regulator, Ofcom could legally seek to block access to the platform throughout the UK.
