We won’t kill terrorists but offer them chance to repent if they choose — General Oluyede

General Christopher Musa Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Staff, has clarified the reasoning behind the Nigerian military’s willingness to allow terrorists to surrender and seek redemption instead of immediately using lethal force.

During his address at the inaugural lecture of the Nigerian Armed Forces at the Joint Doctrine Centre in Abuja on Tuesday, Oluyede responded to public concerns regarding why security forces do not simply eliminate terrorists, particularly following deadly attacks.

“People are asking why we don’t just kill terrorists even though they have taken lives. Well, even the Bible teaches us about giving chances, as with the prodigal son, so we should extend a similar opportunity for repentance to terrorists if they desire it,” he stated.

He emphasized that this approach is also driven by the fact that many of the individuals involved are Nigerians, and providing them a chance for redemption could help mitigate violence.
