The Road to City Hall: How Mamdani Won
Mamdani’s victory was anything but conventional, marking a triumph for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party over the establishment.
1. The Upset in the Democratic Primary
Mamdani first stunned the political establishment in the June Democratic primary, where he defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo by nearly 13 points in the ranked-choice voting contest.
Cuomo’s Comeback Fails: Cuomo, who resigned as Governor in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations, was the presumed frontrunner due to his name recognition.6 Mamdani’s ability to mobilise voters, especially young and first-time participants, delivered the critical upset.
2. Victory in the General Election
After the primary defeat, Cuomo opted to run as an independent candidate in the general election, joining Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
General Election Result: Mamdani secured victory with over 50% of the vote, defeating Cuomo (who received over 40%) and Sliwa (who received over 7%).
Massive Turnout: The election saw a huge surge in participation, with more than two million New Yorkers casting ballots, the largest turnout in a mayoral race in over 50 years.
The Mandate: Mamdani cast his win as a “mandate for change,” vowing to fight for the city’s working class.
The Platform: Affordable City, Bold Ideas
Mamdani’s political success was built on a populist, affordability-focused platform that tapped into widespread New Yorker anxieties over the cost of living. His agenda is set to make him the city’s most liberal mayor in generations.
