Twelve women’s football clubs and two secondary schools have been confirmed for the fifth edition of the Sapphire Nigeria Women Football Supporters Club (SNWFSC) International Girl Child Day (IGCD), set to take place on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the Albati Barracks Mini Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

Since its inception, the annual IGCD initiative has touched the lives of more than 2,000 children, offering young girls pursuing a career in sports opportunities for mentorship, growth, and empowerment.

This year’s event, themed “Climate Change,” aims not only to celebrate the girl child but also to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues that affect communities globally.

SNWFSC president Jadesola Okaiyhan Adelabu said the fifth anniversary will surpass previous editions, highlighting its significance as a milestone celebration. She urged participants to demonstrate discipline and good behaviour while assuring them of an exciting and impactful experience.

The participating clubs and schools will engage in competitive football matches alongside mentoring sessions and developmental programs facilitated by prominent sports personalities.

Organisers believe this combination of sport and education will further inspire young girls to excel both on and off the pitch.

As preparations intensify, expectations are high that this year’s IGCD will strengthen the movement for women’s football in Nigeria while reinforcing the importance of empowering the girl child through sport and advocacy.
