2027: Obasa shifts focus to Agege rep race following challenges in governorship and senate aspirations

Mudashiru Obasa

Political dynamics are shifting for Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, as he is now expected to aim for a position in the House of Representatives for the Agege Federal Constituency in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

According to Badagry Today, This change represents a departure from his previous, more ambitious goals of winning the Lagos State governorship or the Lagos West Senate seat, both of which have faced significant obstacles from within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reports from The PapersNG indicate that Obasa, previously believed to be vying for the governorship to replace current Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, encountered setbacks after high-level discussions in the party. Key figures, including the influential Governance Advisory Council (GAC), are reportedly aligned with President Bola Tinubu in supporting Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the favored candidate for the gubernatorial race.

In light of this, Obasa shifted his focus to contesting the Lagos West Senate seat, considering a challenge against incumbent Senator Idiat Adebule. While his ambition gained some traction within party circles, strong opposition arose from the national leadership and the women’s wing of the party, which insisted on Adebule’s retention due to her vital role as the only female senator from the South-West, crucial for gender representation at the National Assembly.

Faced with mounting pressure, President Tinubu ultimately advised Obasa to scale back his ambitions and pursue a seat in the House of Representatives, specifically targeting the Agege Federal Constituency currently held by Wale Ahmed.

Insider sources have revealed that Obasa has begun discreet but strategic grassroots mobilization in Agege, reconnecting with local structures to build support for his new political goal. This shift is particularly noteworthy as he had previously endorsed another candidate, Mr. Egunjobi, for the same position before this realignment.

Political analysts note that this evolving situation highlights the unpredictable nature of politics within the Lagos APC, where party hierarchy, zoning strategies, and internal agreements significantly influence the aspirations of prominent figures as the 2027 elections approach.

For Obasa, this recalibration might be a practical survival tactic in a political environment where timing, alliances, and loyalty to the party play crucial roles.
