Social media had suggested that El-Rufai, now a significant member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), advocated for the presidency to be awarded to the South in 2027 and favored Peter Obi over Atiku Abubakar.

In a statement released on Monday through his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, El-Rufai clarified that he never made such statements and urged Nigerians to refrain from sharing unverified claims.

He emphasized that the allegations were completely false, even though they had garnered significant attention online.

He stressed that he communicates his views solely through his verified platforms and has never voiced those opinions in any speech, interview, or post.

El-Rufai also criticized the practice of misattributing opinion pieces authored by others to him, even when he shares them on social media.

He condemned what he considered irresponsible political behavior and the misuse of social media to spread misinformation, urging journalists and the public to verify facts before disseminating or publishing news.

He warned of the negative impact on society when media professionals neglect fact-checking and contribute to the spread of unverified information online.

In closing, El-Rufai advised Nigerians to only rely on statements directly from him via his official social media accounts or reputable media interviews.
