Why i left PDP – Ex-Lagos governorship candidate Funso Doherty

Funso Doherty, the former Lagos State governorship candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s persistent internal conflicts as the primary reason for his departure.

Doherty, who had joined the PDP earlier in 2024, confirmed his exit in a letter posted on his X account on Saturday. He explained that his decision was prompted by recent events within the party, particularly a court ruling that nullified its 2025 convention and exacerbated existing divisions among its leaders.

He disclosed that he had previously appealed to the President of the Court of Appeal for a swift resolution to the numerous legal battles plaguing the PDP, highlighting their detrimental effect on Nigeria’s electoral system.

According to Doherty, the court’s final judgment, which invalidated the convention and transferred leadership to a rival faction, was a critical turning point. He condemned the outcome, suggesting it inadvertently benefits the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a party he holds responsible for the nation’s escalating poverty, insecurity, and high cost of living.

“I will not be a party to sustaining this tragic travesty,” Doherty stated. “The people of Lagos State, many of whom have waited far too long for meaningful improvement in their day-to-day lives from the actions of their government, deserve much better than that.”

Doherty also emphasized his long-held belief in the necessity of a strong, unified opposition, expressing concern over the fragility of Nigeria’s democracy.

“For a long time, I have advocated the importance of a united opposition. Nigeria’s democracy is fragile and now under increasing threat, so this is not the time for fracturing and division of opposition political forces that believe in accountability, constitutional order, and the welfare of ordinary citizens,” he wrote.

He concluded by stating that his departure is partly motivated by his commitment to this cause. “The need for opposition unity, especially in Lagos State, has never been more urgent than it is today, and I remain committed to working to make it happen. My departure from the PDP is therefore also partly driven by my belief in the pursuit of that united opposition.”
